The history of KMW began in 1962 when the City of Boston selected the design by Kallmann McKinnell and Knowles for the new Boston City Hall in a nation-wide competition. The building received instant national and international recognition and remains an iconic landmark to this day.
KMW’s projects, past and present, reflect an approach to design developed through a career-long collaboration of Gerhard Kallmann and Michael MckKinnell with the principals of the firm. Both were influential professors of Architecture for over two decades at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Over the past 30 years the practice was joined by a group of professionals who shared their outlook and commitment to a demanding set of design standards, and together they created the firm portfolio as it exists today, expanding the range of projects and breadth of architectural language.
The firm is now a second-generation practice following the focus and methods established over many years and continues to work in the same practice areas as a design studio based firm. The firm is led by Bruce Wood, FAIA, ASLA, LEED AP.
